Malawi couple on UK X-Factor auditions

A Malawian couple on Saturday night showed up in Liverpool’s Echo Arena for UK’s popular music talent television show, X-Factor.

Appearing on stage in a performance shown on ITV 1 were  Liverpool-based Malawians, Goodson Saiwala and his wife Charity Njewa Saiwala, 33 & 36 who had been together for 12 years before getting married three years ago.

The pair hoped that their act, called The Duos, would prove to be a marriage made in heaven at this year’s X Factor auditions.

Talking to the judges before the auditions, the couple compared themselves to pop superstars Jay Z and Beyonce.

Music mogul Louis Walsh asked them: “Do you think you’re good enough to win the entire competition?”

The pair replied “Yes.”

But when they launched their rendition of If I Were A Boyby Beyoncé, judges looked like they were beginning to wonder if Malawi really had the X Factor.

Goodson and Charity: On X-Factor auditions

Judge Kelly Rowland was conspicuously seen unconvinced with the awful performance and asked them: “Oh gosh! You really think that was Jay Z and Beyoncé?”

She added, while laughing: “I think my sister would appreciate the effort and close her ears at the same time.”

The Malawian man confessed: “Yeah, sort of, but it just didn’t go well…”

Take That member Gary Barlow asked the couple rather jokingly:  “Guys, did you rehearse for today, or was that the rehearsal we just saw?”

Goodson responded:  “We did rehearse for quite a while.”

Kelly said: “I just think they didn’t know the lyrics.”

When it came time for voting, N Dubz zinger Tulisa Contostavlos said ‘no’, former Destiny’s Child star and Love Takes Over singer Kelly Rowland also said ‘no’.

Walsh said ‘no’ and finally Barlow said: “I am sorry its four nos.”

So with four definite nos they could not make through to the next round and The Duos had their dreams of bootcamp quashed.

Malawians who watched the show reacted on social networking site, Facebook.

London-based Malawian DJ Tak (Tiyese Kaimila) posted on his Facebook page: “Please X factor take the Malawians off the stage.”

But George Kalindawalo  commented: “Well….we can honestly say that Malawi has been represented X Factor. Wondering why someone would not identify/associate their accent with Malawi.”

Felix Banda posted on Goodson Saiwala’s Facebook wall: “Behold, we have watched X Factor tonite… Hilarious.”
