Child traffiking is serious crime

Malawi Police arrested Roy Micheal Robson on Sunday on allegations that he had trafficked five female and two male infants from Mzuzu to Lilongwe.

Robson was arrested with his accomplice, a Malawian national Rabson Mwale.

Levison Mangani, prosecuting, told Lilongwe Magistrate Court on Tuesday that the Briton and his accomplice trafficked seven children including a four-month old from Mzuzu to Lilongwe’s squatter township of Area 24.

He said the two suspects have documents to show the children have been adopted but said the State need tin thoroughly investigate the matter.

“We would like to investigate the authenticity of the documents [of adoption],” Mangani told the court.

He cited am assessment letter from Ministry of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare which  said the adoption process was carried out in suspicious –manner.

“The ministry is concerned that a single male petitioner as a sole applicant was granted orders contrary to Rule 3, Section 2 (Adoption of Children Act CAP 26:01 Law of Malawi [that is] five female and two male infants,” reads the letter  signed by Mrs R Makhumula, addressed to Police.

According to the letter, the ministry is “astounded” that the Briton relocated from Mzuzu to Lilongwe immediately after being granted adoption.

Mangani asked the court not to release the suspects, saying the two may face mob justice if released.

In her ruling, Chief Resident Magistrate Ruth Chinangwa denied the suspects bail and adjourned the case to April 12.

The guy has been living in Mzuzu for more than 6 years and he has been fostering and adopting these children through normal process as required by the law. Why arresting him now, just because he has moved from Mzuzu to Lilongwe? That’s unfair to him and the children. Why he got 7 children? This question should be well answered by the Mzuzu Social Welfare Office. He’s a good guy and very caring. The first girl he got is a sick child woti she doesn’t sit, walk, talk and etc. Her relatives didn’t want her and no organisation came to… Read more »

Malawi as a Nation has very sick laws and very porous in the Region. We are just proud for nothing with our laws. Ask yourselves why don’t they go to RSA, Zim, TZ and Mozambique but they flock to the warm Heart of Africa. Go to Zim people are thrown in jail to serve for 100 years plus and not months. These guys before coming to Malawi they will have read already the sick laws and believe you me, if at all convicted he will pay MK20,000 OR serve a jail sentence of 3 months BASI!!! So who will fail… Read more »

Please write stories with enough information so that our questions are automaticaly answered. For example, have you talked to the guardians of the children? etc. etc.

It is not clear from this article what the concerns of the authorities are over the ALLEGED child trafficking. Nowhere is it stated the exact offence with which the two men have been charged. NT should do a bit of digging into this story to be sure that it is not defaming the two accused. “The ministry is concerned that a single male petitioner as a sole applicant was granted orders contrary to Rule 3, Section 2 (Adoption of Children Act CAP 26:01 Law of Malawi [that is] five female and two male infants.” As far as I can tell,… Read more »

The first accused is Roy Michael Robson. His alleged accomplice is Rabson Mwale. Is there any significance to the similarity of the two names – Robson & Rabson?
