Malawi court fines 7 pub owners for illegal operation

The Mzuzu Magistrate Court has fined seven pub and bottle store proprietors MK35,000 each or in default serve a six months jail term for operating their businesses without a licence.

The convicts were charged of operating business without licence contrary to section 23(1) as read with section 72(2)1(c) 1 of Liquor Act and they all pleaded guilty.

Police arrested them during a sweeping exercise done in Chibavi , Mchengautuba ,Masasa , Chiputula and Zolozolo Townships.

Mzuzu Police Station spokesperson Maurice Chapola said in statement that the pubs, which operate beyond regulatory time, harbor criminals.justice

“Of late there have been a number of serious cases being committed in some drinking joints in the city hence as Police we decided to act. During the same exercise 74 people were arrested for loitering,” Chapola said.

Chapola said the 74 were charged of rogue and vagabond contrary 184(1)(b) of the penal code .

The Court fined them K10,000 each or in default stay behind bars for 3 months. They all paid.
