Muslim Association of Malawi (MAM) has announced they will hold Eid al-Fitr celebrations on Saturday after sighting a new moon, ending the ninth month of the Islamic calendar observing the annual fast of Ramadan which is considered one of the five “pillars” of Islam.
And President Peter Mutharika has declared Monday as public holidays to celebrate Eid.
Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development spokesperson Mulhabase Mughogho said the holiday will be on Monday and that Friday is still a working day.
Another statement by Dorothy Banda, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government, circulating on social media indicated the President has declared a long weekend holiday “to clear the mystery and confusion among Malawians.”
But Mughogho said the statement did not originate from the Ministry and should be disregarded.
For Muslims, the Eid al-Fitr celebration begins after the fasting month of Ramadan ends. During Ramadan, Muslims abstain from food, drinks and sexual intercourse from dawn to dusk, which is an exercise in self-restraint, intended to bring the faithful closer to God.
Eid al-Fitr starts when the new moon is spotted in the sky, making the Eid holiday different around the world.
In a related development, this week, Mutharika hosted officials from the Quadria Muslim Association of Malawi at Sanjika Palace in Blantyre and hailed the Muslim Community for complementing government’ effort towards the country’s development.
“My Government appreciates the role the Quadria Muslim Association of Malawi plays in enhancing the country’s development and I strongly believe that the association will continue embracing the pillars of development that include hardworking, patriotism and integrity,” said President Mutharika.
General Secretary of the Quadria Muslim Association of Malawi, Karim Osman pledged the association’s commitment towards assisting Government in developing the country
