Malawi Diaspora Forum calls for release of Kasambara
UK-based Malawi Diaspora Forum, a grouping of Malawians living abroad, has added its voice calling for the release of former Attorney General Ralph Kasambara on bail granted by the court.
The Diaspora Forum said in a statement issued Thursday that continued incarceration of Kasambara is “not only illegal but sadistic on the part of Bingu wa Mutharika regime.”
The statement signed by Thom Chiumia, Pastor Patrcick Mtimbusha, Edgar Chibaka and Peter Makossah said the group will soon hold a Diaspora Conference to discuss Malawi situation and how they would zero-in to help fight the creeping dictatorship.
“We are calling a Malawi situation conference soon, to be communicated to all our members, for an action plan against continued human rights abuses and oppression in Malawi,” said the statement.
The Diaspora Forum demanded Kasambara’s immediate release.
Kasambara, who served as attorney general, was first arrested on Monday after reporting to the police an alleged petrol-bombing of his office.
He was released on bail on Wednesday but then re-arrested hours later.
Kasambara was quoted in a weekend newspaper as saying the president was dictatorial and should resign.
