Malawi drops 9 places in FIFA ranking
Malawi national football team, the Flames, has dropped nine places in the monthly FIFA ranking for the month of September, just as World Cup winner Spain regains its number one spot having dethroned the Netherlands.
The Flames moved from position 78 in the world ranked in August and slipped to 87 in the latest ranking released by the world’s soccer governing body.
The Flames also slid to position 21 in the African zone behind Angola, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Malawi drew 2-all away to Chad in a 2012 Nations Cup qualifier and failed to win a qualification berth.
Ivory Coast remain the top ranked side in Africa, but dropped one place in the world from last month’s list to 16.
Meanwhile, minnows Sierra Leone and Namibia have both moved up 24 places in the latest FIFA World Rankings while Togo made the biggest move moving up to 26 spots.
