Malawi experts to test body embalming chemical in fresh foods
Ministry of Agriculture has deployed a team of experts to take samples from fresh foods for formalin, a chemical used in the embalming of dead bodies after the chemical traces were found in fish this week.

Spokesperson in the Ministry of Agriculture Osborn Tsoka said the experts have been drawn from Malawi Bureau of Standards, Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources and Mzuzu University.
“The experts will take the samples from all the markets of fresh foods. The perpetrators will be taken to book, the government will take legal action against them,” said Tsoka.
Some experts say formalin can cause cancer.
Malawi Bureau of Standards director Devlin Chokazinga said his organization is still in contact with Ethiopian Airways captain, Charles Massi, who had initially brought the fish that tested positive for the chemical.
“We requested him to take us where he bought the fish but he has not yet done so. We are still in touch with him,” he said.
It is believed the vendors buy the dangerous chemical from Kamuzu Central Hospital mortuary.
