Malawi FDH Premiership: Silver Strikers beat bottom side Creck

Creck Sporting Club’s miserable season in the FDH Bank Premiership showed no signs of improving on Saturday afternoon, as the struggling side suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Silver Strikers at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe.

The result leaves Creck rooted firmly to the bottom of the 16-team table, having mustered just five points from their opening 12 matches – a wretched return that has yielded only a single victory and two draws all season.

Silver Strikers made the breakthrough through Nickson Mwase, who reacted quickest to pounce on a rebound from Chinsinsi Maonga’s free-kick in the 22nd minute to settle the contest.

Creck pushed hard in search of a leveller as the match wore on, but found Silver’s well-drilled defence a difficult wall to break down, while goalkeeper George Chikooka produced a string of crucial saves at key moments to deny the hosts and protect Silver’s slender advantage.

The win proved doubly significant for Silver Strikers, propelling the Central Bankers to the summit of the table on 25 points from 12 matches, cementing their status as this season’s early pacesetters.

For Creck, however, the defeat represents another significant blow in what is fast becoming an increasingly desperate battle to avoid the drop, with mounting pressure now firmly on the club to turn around a dismal run of results before it is too late.

Elsewhere in Saturday’s FDH Bank Premiership action, Mighty Wanderers were held to a 1-1 draw by Moyale Barracks at Mzuzu Stadium, in a result that will do little to ease growing scrutiny on the Nomads ahead of their looming CAF Champions League clash with Tanzania’s Simba SC.

At Mpira Stadium in Blantyre, Ekhaya FC also played out a 1-1 stalemate against Goshen City Dedza Dynamos, while Blue Eagles edged to a narrow 1-0 victory over MAFCO at Chitowe Stadium to round off a mixed day of results across the division.
