Malawi girl, 14, kills mother over ‘stop prostitution’ advice

A fourteen year old girl in Mtsiriza Township in the capital Lilongwe on Monday reportedly killed her mother – Linda Chimukweseni – for reprimanding her disturbing prostitution overtures, police have confirmed.

Lilongwe police publicist Kingsley Dandaula told local press that Chimukweseni was pronounced dead upon arrival at Kamuzu Central Hospital due to severe loss of blood.

“She was fervently stabbed by the top of an umbrella,” said Dandaula.

According to Dandaula, Chimukweseni had sat down her teenage daughter for a round of pieces of advice when the latter got wild, picked up the umbrella and stabbed the former till she was unconscious.

The incident could be the first of its kind in Malawi whose style of living is deep rooted in a conservative culture which provides for children to respect elders.

A resident of the township who arrived at the house minutes after the incident happened, told Nyasa Times that the sight of the scene was disturbing.

“You couldn’t just imagine that it was a small girl doing it,” she said.

According to the resident, the girl (name withheld) has lately been spotted at various drinking joints plying her commercial sex trade as well as flirting around with married men.

“Her situation was going out of hand, and we had to ask her mother to sit her daughter down,” she added.

It is not clear whether the girl, currently in police custody, will face trial. According to Malawi laws, at her age of fourteen she is a juvenile.

But Dandaula said that considering the gravity of the crime she committed, her case will be forwarded to court.

“We will be advised on what to do about it there,” he said.

Malawi has registered a number of disturbing reports on minors selling sex in the past few days.

On Saturday, Weekend Nation reported of bubbly teenaged girls selling their bodies to men twice or thrice their age at Mama’s Shabin in Ntcheu at as low as K500 (about US$ 1) for protected sex and K1 000 (US$ 2) for unprotected sex.

If you go to areas like Mtsiriza, Mtandire, Mgona, Chimoka, Kwasenti, you will be able to appreciate how poverty is taking a toll on urban dwellers. The result is that everyone tries whatever can be done to survive. Naturally, boys chose robbery and other crimes while girls are pushed to prostitution. But for one to maintain some sense of ‘courage’ in these professions, you need drugs to suppress your conscience. Hence these incidents. We have known this event because it has been picked up by the media, otherwise its a common event in these areas. Ask people from Gulliver how frequently they bury people killed in Mtandire and Mtsiriza.

This is sad and unfortunate, I think its foolish to blame the government on this, its just a very unfortunate situation and a very sad thing to happen to someone, the little girl has lost a mother, by her own hands. Such things should not be happening, we parents must begin to go back to basics, to teach our children on the meaning of respect and how to go about with it. We adults must also start living by example, showing them how to live in peace and show respect unto others.
