Malawi golf society UK holds first championship

Malawi Golf Society UK (MGS) held its first Malawi UK Open Championship last Saturday at Leen Valley Golf Club in Nottingham where Robert Hendrikse triumphed.

The event was organized  by Robert Brown Consulting Group (RBCG) and Softek Shipping Solutions, Malawian-owned companies based in UK.

The golf course itself was in pristine condition and extremely challenging.  Picturesque tee-off positions were followed by greens on hill-tops and included a 30 metre drop to on a Par 3 200 yards.

Hendrikse was the winner with an impressive score of 34 points.

Although attendance to the event was less than expected, the show went ahead and produced some interesting running battles in the field.

At after the front 9, three players scores were level.  On the last hole, it was a two-horse race between Hendrikse and Gareeb Osman.  Hendrikse held his nerve with a 25 foot putt which sealed the victory.

Hendrikes also collected the prizes of Longest Drive with a 310 yard drive, and nearest to pin challenge from the Communications and Media Secretary Martha Storey Nkhoma.

The Society also took the opportunity to elect an interim Committee as follows:

Chairman and Treasurer:  Gareeb Osman

Vice Chairman and Marketing:  Chauncy Gondwe

Communications and Media: Martha Storey Nkhoma

Committee Members:  Michael Gladstone, Robert Hendrikse, Rohan Mahomed.
