Malawi government to distribute 1.3 million energy saver bulbs

Government will from Tuesday distribute 1.3 million energy saver bulbs national wide for free to residential customers, small enterprises and public buildings.

The distribution of the bulbs is under Energy Efficient Lighting Programme with support from Department for International Development.

A press statement from the Ministry of Natural Resources, Energy and Environment says the official launch of the programme will be held on Tuesday at Malabada Health Centre in populous Ndirande Township.

The statement says commercial and industrial customers will be required to purchase the remaining 700 000 energy saver bulbs at a subsidized price through designated retail outlets.

“The energy saver bulbs have started arriving in the country and the process of installation will start soon,” reads the statement.

With the two million bulbs, Escom is expected to save about 30 megawatts according to government.

By using energy-saving bulbs it  will reduce the amount of carbon dioxide emitted to the atmosphere .
