Malawi govt short of US$280mil for relief food aid
Malawi g overnment is battling to raise US$280 million for relief food for its starving six million people as response from donors has been poor on relief food.
Disaster Department Communications Officer Jeremiah Mphande said so far the government has raised just US$116 million out of the projected US$395 million.
“Out of the US$395 million, US$307.5 was for relief food and the remaining money was for social transfer but we are far behind the budget,” he lamented.
President Peter Mutharika declared Malawi a state of disaster to attract relief food for close to six milion Malawians hit by El Nino, a weather phenomenon that causes drought and Al Nino, a weather phenomenon that causes floods.
Mphande said this after the government officially received 80 containers of semi cooked food from China.
The National Food Reserve Agency has this week received 70000 metric tonnes of maize part of which will go to the starving Malawians.
Mphande said distribution of relief food has now Started through the World Food Program and it will end in March next year.
