Malawi High Court judge Joseph Manyungwa dead aged 46

Malawi’s High Court Judge Joseph Manyungwa  died Saturday  aged 46.

Judiciary spokesperson Mike Tembo said Manyungwa died  at Mwaiwathu Private Hospital in Blantyre after a short-illness.

Family relations also  confirmed the death in an interview with Nyasa Times.

“He was treated of pneumonia but could not win the battle,” said a relation.

He rose through the ranks of the Malawi Justice Ministry from State Advocate to become Judge and at times controversial.

Manyungwa was known amongst people as a “friendly” and also “dedicated ” to his job.

Manyungwa joined the Judiciary on September 1, 2004.

Despite still serving as a judge, Justice Manyungwa was facing probe over allegations that he pocked bribes to deliver judgement in a case which he did not hear and was handled by another High Court judge Justice Mc Lean Kamwambe.

Late Manyungwa was accused of receiving bribes for him to rule in favor of Fargo Limited in a case where Samantha Kurisighe sued Fargo Limited.

He said burial for the late judge could be held Sunday at his home village in Bvumbwe, Thyolo.
