Malawi hosts Botswana in CAF U-17 qualifiers

Malawi  will host Botswana in the first round of the CAF U-17 qualifiers slated for the weekend of September 7,8,9 this year, , according to the fixture of the qualifiers released by Confederation of African Footbball (CAF).

The finals will be played in 2013 in Morocco. The return leg will be held on September 21,22,23

If the Junior Flames will manage to burn the young Zebras into ashes, they will face Rwanda in their next assignment in a home and away fixture as well.

The Junior Flames were a force to reckon with in their previous matches as they went on to qualify for the U-17 Youth World Cup Championship which took place in Nigeria.

During the tournament, the team boasted of talented youngsters in the likes of Atletico Madrid Robin Ngalande, Victor Nangwale, Onani Nsengwa, Pilirani Zonda, Francis Mlimbika, Peter Mselema, Kondwani Lufeyo, Tony Chitsulo, Bongani Kaipa, Luka Milanzi, Mike Kaziputa and Patience Kalumo.

A number of youngsters from the team have managed to graduate to the Under-20 national team.

After the tournament, some players were spotted by European clubs like Robin Ngalande, who is now in Spain with Atletico Madrid Youth Side.

Another success story for Malawi Under-17 side is that in 2001 it earned the country its first ever Silverware since the 1988 East and Central Championship when it won the inaugural Cosafa Under -17 Championship at Kamuzu Stadium after beating South Africa 3-1.

The team was inspired by the likes of Benard ‘Young’ Kalirani, Don Pahuwa, Evance Lorenzo, Robert ‘Baggio’ Ng’ambi, Kondwani Gawani, Grant Lungu and Rahim Ishmael.
