Malawi inflation hits double-digits

Official data show Malawi’s inflation has hit a double-digit figure.

The data from the National Statistics Office (NSO) in Zomba confirmed fears that Malawi’s economy is heading for a fall.

NSO data showed on Monday that Malawi’s consumer inflation quickened to 10.3 percent year-on-year in January from 9.8 percent in December.

Economic plunge worsens cost of living

“Food inflation has gone up by 6.1 percent as compared to 5.2 percent recorded in the previous month due to price increases in cereal and cereal products and other food commodities,” the NSO said in a statement.

Malawi is facing the worst economic crisis with prices of commodities sky-rocketing daily.
