The current system is fine. DPP government must be bold. If the current govt doesn’t like the Law Commissions recommendation they have the right to reject it. Mind you it was a recommendation so there was no obligation on the part of the current cabinet to accept it. The only problem was that the cabinet scrutinised and adopted the bill. It was therefore wrong and daft to reject a bill that was presented for debate and adoption by its own cabinet Minister. Should we say Tembenu wanted the bill to be rejected? Unfortunately Emily, the opposition is guilty of the same problem you are accusing Mutharika of. They were personalising and politicising 50+1 as a leeway to win elections. To me the problem is rather that 50+1 does not solve any of our problems – a filthy political culture defined by nepotism, corruption; and poor economic plans and vision. As you rightly say, the opposition wanted to get an opportunity to gang up with other parties in order to be in power. How different is that with ‘DPP, UDF and PP ‘alliance?’ We are all fucked up.
