Malawi leader bestow 6 lawyers with senior counsel status: Kasambara, Phoya decorated
Malawi President Mrs. Joyce Banda has honoured and conferred the status of Senior Counsel to six legal practitioners effective from August 13 2012.
The designation of a legal practitioner as a Senior Counsel (SC) is intended to recognize the legal experts whose standing and achievements justify an expectation on the part of the public and the judiciary that they will provide outstanding services, as counsel, to the administration of justice.
Those that have been conferred the SC status are Ralph Kasambara, Justice Edward Twea, Justice Richard Chinangwa, lawyer Henry Phoya, Gertrude Hiwa and lawyer Bazuka Mhango.
Kasambara is Malawi’s Attorney General who also doubles as Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs. He is also national director of legal affairs for the ruling People’s Party.
Phoya is Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development.
Twea is a supreme court of appeal judge.
Chinangwa is a High Court judge.
Mhango is a veteran lawyer and is second deputy director of legal affairs in the PP.
Hiwa is law commissioner at the Law Commission.
The announcement was made Tuesday on state Malawi Broadcasting Corporation.
