Malawi ministers to undergo orientation

Malawi’s cabinet ministers and their deputies will undergo a three-day orientation workshop at Sunbird Nkopola Lodge in the eastern lakeshore tourism district of Mangochi from Monday.

The 20-member cabinet ministers were appointed by President Peter Mutharika who won Presidential Elections during the May 20 Tripartite Elections.

A statement from the State House indicated that President Mutharika will open the workshop on Monday in the morning and that their orientation workshop would be held in camera.

President Mutharika appointed a lean cabinet of 20 with people from different backgrounds including non-Parliamentary members.

Goodall Gondwe, who was the first Finance Minister during Bingu WA Mutharika, returned despite not winning a Parliamentary seat.

Private practicing lawyer Samuel Tembenu was appointed Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, former Chief Secretary Bright Msaka got a cabinet portfolio as Minister of Housing, Lands and Urban Development.

Academician Emmanuel Fabiano was appointed Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Dr Allan Chiyembekeza (MP) was also appointed Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, Paul Chibingu (MP) took up the Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security, and Kondwani Nankhumwa (MP) is Minister of Information, Civic Education and Tourism.

Leader of government in parliament Francis Katsaila heads Transport and Public Works, Henry Mussa (MP) Minister of Labour, George Chaponda (MP) Minister of Foreign Affairs, Patricia Kaliati (MP) Minister of Gender, Children and Disability Welfare Development, Jean Kalirani (MP) Minster of Health, Grace Obama Chiumia (MP) Minster of Sports, Youth and Culture, Tarcizius Thom Gowelo (MP) as Minister of Local Government, Joseph Mwanavekha as Minister of Trade and Industry, opposition UDF president Atupele Muluzi as Minister of Energy Mining.

Only two people Jappie Mhango (MP) was appointed Deputy Minister of Defence and Vincent Ghambi for Education, Science and Technology.
