Malawi mourns death of ex-MBC’s Dexter Kanike killed by robbers

The nation is mourning former Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) television producer, Dexter Kanike, who many described as kind and humble.

Kanike, 48 was killed by armed robbers at his residence in Chilimba Township, Blantyre, police have confirmed.

Blantyre police Public Relations Officer, Elizabeth Divala told Nyasa Times that a group of unknown thugs invaded Kanike’s house in the wee hours of Wednesday (June 1st).

“The criminals broke into his house and went straight to his room where they started demanding money, but he told them he didn’t have any cash with him,” explained Divala.

Divala said the criminals stole laptop and cameras before stabbing him with unknown object.

The victim was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Kanike was the producer of well-known television gospel programme, Melody Hour.

Meanwhile,  has been an outpouring of grief and tributes from the media fraternity.

“Kanike was a wonderful, hard working and warm human being. He promoted gospel music in the country through his programmes,” said one of his friends and former workmate at MBC, Geoffrey Kapusa.

Martha Chikuni who worked with Kanike at the MBC said: “ He wll remain in our hearts and our memories for ever.”

Kanike hailed from Kasina village in the area of Traditional Authority Kaphuka in Dedza.

Dexter had excellent video shooting/mixing skills that MBC TV had ever produced. He was a very peaceful and good neighbour/friend to many in Naperi. May His Soul Rest in eternal Peace.
