Malawi Music Awards to honour Sauka: Composer of National Anthem

“Going by the theme of the Awards “Celebrating Malawi Music At 50” which is in tandem with Malawi’s 50 Years of Independence, a selected panel of Judges have decided to give this converted award to Michael-Fredrick Paul Sauka,” said Bright Sonani, the spokesperson of the Second Edition  of the Awards in a statement.

Sauka’s achievement have for decades gone unrecognized at national level with only a few mentions in the country’s media.

The MUMA Awards, this year go into second edition with the main function set to be held on Friday, February 27, 2015.

Born in 1934, Sauka died on August 15, 1990 and never got his deserved recognition for his contribution to the struggle for political and social emancipation through the arts.

The Life Time Achiever is the only category in the Annual MUMA Awards, which unlike the rest of the categories is not put forward for public voting. Last edition, which was an inaugural event, awarded about ten veteran musicians as life time achievers.

This edition of the Awards has fifteen (15) categories, which are open for voting covering different genre and artists/groups that have made an impact on the local music scene in the 2014 season.

“To vote one is required to send an SMS with the keyword of an artist to 58411. For example in the Best New category just send bn3 if you want to vote for Sangie,” said Sonani.

A full list of nominees and the voting codes can also be accessed on the MUM Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/mumaawards or follow us on twitter @MUMA_awards, and the website: http://mumaawards.tumblr.com.

The Second Edition of the MUMA Awards will be held at the Bingu International Conference Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe on Friday February 27, 2015.
