Malawi Muslims seek apology from lawmaker Mussa for ‘discrediting’ their religion

Representatives of the Muslims Association of Malawi  (MAM) are asking Member of Parliament for Chiradzulu East Constituency, Henry Mussa,  to apologise to the Muslim community for incorrect use of scared Islamic words.

In a  statement which Nyasa Times possesses issued Wednesday signed by MAM’s Secretary General Dr Salmin Omar, the Muslim mother body is accusing Mussa of wrongly using and pronouncing the word ‘laa ilaaha illallah,’ (there is no God worthy of worship but Allah alone) during the installation of ceremony of Senior chief Kadewere last Saturday in Chiradzulu district.

Sheikh Omar says in a statement that Musa instead wrongly pronounced the word as ‘lahii lahii laa laa’ which according to Omar sounds awkward and meaningless.

Mussa: Used an Islamic slogan wrongly

“The association is of the belief that the honourable MP either did not consult the learned Muslims for correct pronunciation of the words out of his disregards for their status or that he deliberately twisted them to attract disgust for the region,” reads that statement.

It says the lawmaker could have easily used the Yao language which he himself and the majority of the gathering at the venue comprehend.

“The statement should therefore serve as the warning to all those who mock and jeer at the only true religion of Islam. Those who do not know should use their own senses to consult those with knowledge about Islam before they do anything else.”

But the association says it is very much aware that gripped with ignorance on the tenets of Islam, some people think that they are free to use Islam anyhow for material gain, political mileage or want of fame.

“Apart from glorious teachings, spiritual aspirations and communication of values for the betterment of worlds, neither Quran nor Hadith is to be used for unislamic entertainment or mundane attainment.

MAM says incorrect use of pronunciation of such portions like ‘laa ilaaha illallah, at political rallies or any unislamic gathering is disdainful and discretion against Islam.

“It should be noted that the attack on Islam is an attack on its followers who are at the same time bonafide Malawian Muslim citizens.”

There has been no immediate reaction from Mussa.
