Malawi Parliament to meet Feb 8, 18 bills on table

The next session of Parliament is expected to start next month with 18 bills lined up for deliberations, Speaker, Henry Chimunthu Banda has disclosed.

Banda has since emphasized that the law which regulates movement of lawmakers, Section 65 will only be invoked once the court injunctions against it are vacated.

In an interview, Chimunthu Banda said the august House will convene on February 8 for a month long deliberations, which include presentation of mid-term budget by Minister of Finance.

”Its not obvious that all bills will be tabled as there are other issues the House will also have to look into such as the presentation and scrutinization of the mid-term budget,” said Chimunthu Banda.

He said one of top-list issues slated for deliberation is the harmonization of electoral laws, thus, the Local Government Act and the Paliamentary and Presidential Act in readiness for next year’s tripartite elections.

”The petitions on Section 65 will only tabled once the injunctions that were obtained are vacated, otherwise the issue is not on the list”.

This will be a third meeting of Parliament under President Joyce Banda who took over office following the sudden death of late President Bingu wa Mutharika in April, 2012 due to cadiac arrest.
