Malawi Police arrest 2 ‘Hope Ministries’ officials for theft by trick

Malawi Police in commercial capital Blantyre have arrested two men, Nelson Samu and Elia Banda over theft by trick offences.

They were going about in the commercial capital telling people that they have fish powder and they were masquerading as church officials from Hope Ministries along Chiradzulu road.

The law enforcers arrested these suspects on Friday, April 1 2016 at Limbe Catholic Cathedral where they wanted trick a certain man, according to Blantyre Police spokesperson Elizabeth Divala.

“They have been tricking people in the name of Hope Ministries. They committed similar offences last year. They tricked a certain man and went away with K1.5 million.

“They were arrested at Limbe Cathedral where they wanted to trick someone who became suspicious and subsequently alerted the Police who went there and arrested them,” said Divala.

Divala also said during interrogation, they admitted to have committed the offence.

“We are therefore calling all those that were duped or tricked over fish powder to report to Blantyre Police for identification,” she added.

Forty year-old Samu hails from Mitawa village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Likoswe Chiradzulu district whereas 45 year-old Banda comes from Mukwakatongola village, T/A Zilakowa in Nkhata Bay district.
