Malawi police arrest HIV-positive man over sex assault on girl, 4: Infected her

Malawi Police in Mchinji are keeping in custody a 45 years old man Peter Eliot, for allegedly defiling a 4 years old baby and infecting her with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

According to Mchinji Police Public Relations Officer, Inspector Kaitano Lubrino, Eliot who is on antiretroviral (ARV) treatment was arrested on July 6 following a complaint by the child’s mother that she had been defiled.

“A day before his arrest the mother (name withheld) was bathing the child and that it was that same time when she realized the abomination and called other elderly people to witness the development,” he said.

Lubrino further said the development angered them and they were prompted to report the case to Gumba Police Unit where they were referred to Gumba Health Center for medical checkup.

Meanwhile,a medical report revealed that the child had been defiled for more than once and HIV test indicated that the victim was positive.

The child later disclosed and mentioned Peter Eliot to be responsible, a development that prompted police to immediately institute a manhunt for the suspect.

The suspect confessed to have slept with the baby for two times as part of a ritual for him to get rich.

Peter Eliot hails from Chisaka village in the area of Senior Chief Mkanda and has been charged with defilement which is contrary to section 138 of the penal code. He will appear before court soon to answer the charge.
