Malawi Police arrest Mangochi man for murdering ex-wife, mother in-law over child’s custody

Malawi Police in the lakeshore district of Mangochi have arrested a 25-year-old man, Stephen Sani, for allegedly hacking to death his ex-wife and mother in-law following a quarrel the two picked up over child’s custody.

Mangohci Police Deputy Public Relations Officer, Amina Tepani Daudi, said the suspect killed the two by hacking them following a quarrel.

According to  Dausi,  the suspect and his wife got divorced on August 5, 2017 after Annie’s parents ordered their daughter to go back to school, a move which angered Sani.

“The deceased left their home (their parents house) to see a relative at Mbapi village. As they walked at a distance of 2 kilometers, they met the suspect who stopped them claiming he wanted to see his two years old child. However, the suspect started beating and hacked the two with a panga knife and run away,” said Daudi.

She said it is believe that the suspect was following the deceased before the incidence.

The bodies of the two were found lying in a near by farm in a pool of blood and deep cut wounds on the neck by some passersby.

The matter was reported to Group Village Headman Matola who informed Monkey-Bay Police Post and postmortem conducted at Monkey-Bay Health centre revealed that death was due to severe injuries and loss of blood, she disclosed.

After launching a manhunt, police arrested the suspect and he accepted to have committed the crime during interrogation.

Daudi said the matter was reported to police by Elida Moyenda, 70, mother and grandmother to the two.

“The first deceased, Annie Smoke, 47 was a mother in-law to the suspect while the second deceased was also known as Annie Smoke, 21, was an ex-wife to the suspect,” she explained.

The Police arrested the suspect who hails from Kalowa Village Traditional Authority Nankumba in the district.

Sani admitted to have committed the offence during police interrogation was charged with murder and will appear before court soon.

Yes let him suffer for killing two innocent people. Unlike Chanthunya who only killed one

Chanthunya is Joyce Banda ‘s nephew.
Malawi is a society where those with names get preferantial treatment.
His argument is that Malawi still has a death sentence.
It’s up to the state to take recent judgements and prove to South African authorities that things have changed .
