Malawi Police arrest prison warder for assaulting inmate, harming private parts
Police in Rumphi have arrested 36 year old Limbani Banda-a prison warder at Rumphi prison for assaulting an inmate causing grievous harm to his private parts .
Rumphi police station public relations officer Victor Khamisi confirmed the arrest in an interview with Nyasa Times on Saturday.
The arrest comes after Nyasa Times had reported that Banda had injured an inmate Simeone Theu in the private parts with his boots for no apparent reason.
Rumphi Prison officer in charge Osbert Nyondo confirmed about the assault.
He said the prison warder has now been arrested and formally charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm contrary to section 181 of the penal code.
”He will appear in court soon after the police have finalized their investigations,” said Khamisi.
Facts of the matter are that on Wednesday, Limbani Banda while on duty at Rumphi prison assaulted Simeone Theu who is serving a 1 year 6 months sentence at the correctional institution.
Theu was hit on the private parts and fainted for 30 minutes before he was rushed to Rumphi district hospital where he was admitted.
He was passing urine mixed with blood, a condition hospital authorities said could lead to impotence or urine failure.
