Malawi police arrest Rev Munthali of MCP for obstructing First Lady convoy

Malawi police have arrested Malawi Congress Party (MCP) Deputy Publicity Secretary Rev. Maurice Munthali for obstructing the First Lady Gertrude Mutharika’s motorcade on a motorway from Blantyre to Lilongwe.

Rev Munthali: Detained

The Police at Zalewa road block received an intelligence radio message that there was an unknown vehicle that was charging on the First Lady’s convoy at high and dangerous speed after the convoy passed Chingeni road on route to Blantyre.

According to the radio Intel messages the unknown vehicle was warned to stay away from the convoy by the Police blocking vehicle on First Lady’s convoy but the driver continuously ignored the gun point warnings and instead attempted to overtake the convoy on several occasions . The convoy nevertheless blocked the vehicle.

Meanwhile, the Police Intel messages were being monitored by Police at Zalewa road which advised the convoy to cruise up to the roadblock. The strange car kept chase of the convoy up to the road block.

When the First Lady’s convoy passed the Zalewa roadblock the police closed the road and ordered the unknown vehicle to stop and the driver was taken into custody at the roadblock for questioning.

Upon interrogation it transpired that the man apprehended was MCP’s Deputy Publicity Secretary Maurice Munthali.

Munthali is currently in custody at the Zalewa roadblock Police as the police is trying to establish motive for his conduct.

Police suspect Munthali attempted to put the life of the First Lady in the danger.

Munthali actions are said to be reckless and criminal.

  1. Why couldnt the security guys shoot the unknown vehicle? This is carelessness of highest order from the part of First Lady’s security detail…..

  3. Abusa kusaka kutchuka kumeneko? Muziti DPP yakumangani mukumenyela ufulu anthu? Kkkkkk kodi MCP yazaza ndi azibusa oganiza mosekesa bwanji???

  4. Palibe nkhani yomangila munthu wamulungu apa osangomanga miseu yayikulu bwanj these are public roads not presidential roads…iwowo nde azingophangila chilichose umbuli basi

  5. Where are the helicopters that Kamuzu,Muluzi and Bingu used to use. Pitala and his wife have been disturbing us a s motorists for some time now. Does it mean we are poorer than the Kamuzu Days. This is because dpp is busy stealing like Jeff wa Jeff says in her conversation with another thief Nankhumwa. What is cheaper to have a convoy of 21 vehicles and policemen lining up all the 320 km. We are a shithole country or we have a shithole leader.

  6. I thought this guys are trained to cruise at supersonic speeds! how come an ordinary driver can manage to cruise at the same speed?kkkkkkkkkkkkk

  7. That’s not a crime. I see people do that all the time even in the USA. I just think they’re stupid. Malawi doesn’t have alternative roads ndiye mumati akuyenderani kuti? Misewu ndi ya one lane. First lady azikwera ndege to avoid conveniencing tax payers on our poorly structured roads.

    1. Where in USA? Which USA? Osanamizapo anthu pano, inenso ndakhalako ku Washington, USA.

  8. Atumbuka zinthu mumazitengera pa gong’o bwanji chonsechotu ndi munthu wa Mulungu muziti a DPP akukumangani

  9. Regardless of whether it was the first lady’s motorcade or not. Or whether he is opposition or not. Overtaking a service vehicle with a siren and lights is a traffic and criminal offence punishable by law. High way code clearly instructs a driver to make way for siren and lights usually lights without siren behind you means you slow down and pull over aside and wait for the officer to explain to you why you are being pulled over. This is not political it’s rather a traffic offence aggravated by the fact that the convoy was carrying the First Lady and he should known better that his actions have consequences. Now they will say that the government is in democratic for arresting opposition politicians when they are clearing breaking traffic laws. Why he did it, no one knows so yes he must explain himself why he chose to do that. In other countries the security detail would have engaged with the hostile vehicle with much more lethal force, he is lucky to get away with a detention.

  10. Mr.Munthali,in the first place, why do you join MCP the Party that inflicted untold sufferings to the ?Northerners? Secondly,it is unbelievable in an independent Malawi, the Police behaves like brutes. After morethan 50 years of independence,Malawians are treated like wild-animals,when are they going to enjoy their hard-won democracy? Is the first lady does not visit toilets? is she born special? Afterall, her husband Muthalika did not fight for the independence of our country leave alone,multi-party struggle. When are the people of Malawi going to enjoy their freedom? And you Mr.Munthali, what made you join the MCP while AFORD is there and it is AFORD which brought multi-party freedom in our country. We Malawians in diaspora, vehemently condemn the fascist-like Police for the harassment of Rev.Munthali.Let’s hope that this brutish manner by the national Police Force against the law abiding citizens must end there.

    1. What suffering to the northerners when the northerners were in the core of MCP.AFORD did not bring multi-party it was the people of Malawi .We stayed put in Malawi when cowards were running away ,run all the way to USA and other countries..How can a sane person ask Bruce why he joined MCP instead of Aford ,does it mean that all people from the north should be in Aford.W hen did you become the spokes person for the diaspora’s?.You just give yourself positions and unwarranted authority …AFORD is no more, dead, not even worth mentioning. The northerners this ,the north that but when you get money you build houses in blantyre and Lilongwe….Bruce Munthali joined MCP as a free person exercising his rights (freedom of association)..If Aford is for northerners then there is a problem with anyone from Aford to rule this country, you guys will never produce a president ..When replying don’t give me your usual bulls droppings of I have associated with Kanyama,Chipembere etc..You always want to be great by association when you are just like Kamlepo Kalua, a liar..Freedom fighter my foot, you are an economic asylum seekers under the pretence of running away from persecution..Your partner is Kamlepo he also peddles the same lies, he went to RSA to seek employment as a waiter but claims to have run away from persecution…Stop your nonsense for some of us risked our life’s in Malawi and abroad when you guys made a runner all the way to where ever you are ..I don’t want to read your lies anymore ,you have to stop .STOP YOUR TRIBALISM IT STINKS

  11. Politics of Malawi but 2019 people will vote don’t waste your time on arresting people , if you want your CV to be clean in 2019 avoid arresting people

  14. What was this guy smoking? Or does he suffer from a psychological or psychiatric issue?
MCP need to look into this, and expel this guy as needed, if it is determined his actions were criminal in nature.
Bizarre, to say the least. May be they guy was crying out for help for whatever ails him mentally.

  15. Please muzikwela ndege U inconvenience us on the road with your stupid convoys! Timisewu ntochepa kale tilimbilaneso ndi inu mazoba?

    1. Guys lets comment things which can assist us in future this Reverend claiming himself to be Munthali atamande mwayi kuti the police officer he was cool but ndikanakhala ine pa convoy bwezi lero mukupita ku Hewe kwanuko chifukwa munthu wamkulu playing around with the convoy shaaaa this police officer he must be transferred to other departments he is not fit .

  16. We’ll done police but what about those cadets who caused commotion @ parliament, they are from BT & they actually passed the same road block?no any arrests up to now.

  19. OK munthali,? Criminal? Kkkkkkk DPP @ its best . go and arrest chilima who is trying to snatch the presidency from munthalika

  20. How many vehicles were in this convoy? How close was Rev Munthali’s vehicle to first ladies that he wanted to overtake it? Why was he not stopped there and then?

  21. Mwayamba ku kumanga opposition in pretext of obstruction. We knew it that you had been wanting him

  22. Zopusa, agulukunyinda inu, first lady convoy what for? Mukungowononga misonkho yathu ndi zimagalimoto zikuluzikulu, zitsiru inu, anthu akuba,ng’ona za DPP. 2019 kuchedwa muzipita, ife tikuzunzika inu mukusaweretsa ndalama za boma. Shupit!

  24. Ndiye zugwilizana bwanji kupanga overtake and putting someone’s life in danger? Ife timapangidwa overtake daily are we not safe? Munthuyo anali pa changu basi osati zimenezi after all who can plan to kill this lady like seriously for What?

  25. Under Malawian laws, the first lady is not entitled to use a convoy. Palibepo mulandu apapa. No wonder they have failed to cite a single provision of law that has been breached. And practically how can a person block a convoy while trailing behind? Nonsense. Kenako muona kuti zithera pa conduct likely to cause breach of peace. This DPP Government and its machinations can never be trusted hence likely that they new is Rev. Munthali already even before directing his detention. Dont fool us.

    1. A first First Lady nawo azipangitsa traffic to stop. Kumalawi nkosatheka. They want you to stop an hour before the president/first lady passes by. I hated that type of vip protocol in Malawi. Mumaiwala kuti anthu amakhala ndi mapulani awonso akamachoka kunyumba know. Abusawo must have been in a hurry going somewhere and perhaps he was told to wait as if the first First Lady would fill the whole road!

    2. Rev. Munthali was rushing to see a sick relative at the hospital in Blantyre. His son was driving the car and he innocently wanted to overtake a car ahead of him with MG registration, not known to him that it’s part of a convoy. After several attempts he gave up and slowed down since he felt that the car was not giving him way.

It was only when they reached the road block that they were told that they were trying to overtake the first lady’s convoy. They were detained for questioning but not arrested. Rev Munthali refused to give a statement apart from his explanation . The fracas caused vendors to come in and demand his release. He’s not in police custody anywhere.
