Malawi Police arrest Zambian national for murder
Malawi police in the northern district of Mzimba have arrested a Zambian national in connection with the murder of Chawezi Soko of Kaphuta village, T/A M’mbelwa in the district.
Mzimba police spokesperson Gift Nyirongo confirmed the arrest in an interview with Nyasa Times on Wednesday.
Nyirongo identified the suspect as Moses Lutepo 17, of Kanyelo village, T/A Phikamalaza in Lundazi district.
Stabbed to death
According to Nyirongo on July 7, at around 10hrs in the morning, the suspect stabbed the deceased on the forehead with a knife after they had quarrelled over payment of a piece of fried pork meat the deceased was selling.
Nyirongo said the deceased met his fate while selling roasted pork (kanyenya) at Chindulika market along the Malawi-Zambia boarder.
”Facts of the matter are that during the material day, the suspect ate a piece of roasted pork meat which the deceased was selling. However, the suspect refused to pay and a quarrel ensued. The suspect then stabbed the deceased on the forehead with a knife,” said Nyirongo.
The police spokesman further said members of the community policing evacuated the deceased to hospital where he died the following day on 8th July.
Post-mortem results showed that Soko died due to severe loss of blood.
Lutepo is expected to appear before the court soon to answer murder charges contrary to section 208 of the penal code.
Mzimba is one of the districts registering high cases of murder, suicide and sudden deaths.
