Malawi Police Commanders undergo public order management training
Malawi Police Service (MPS) commanders have been urged to demonstrate effective leadership of a professionalized policing style in any emerging public disorder situations in the country.
Southern Region Commissioner of Police Wilson Matinga made the call in Zomba when he opened a two-week advanced public order course for commanders in the police service currently taking place at Police College.
He said the public order course comes at an appropriate time especially when the country is registering an upsurge of protest activity in both size and frequency.
“You will be in agreement with me that the character of protest is time and again evolving in terms of: the numbers involved, areas affected, associated sporadic violence; disruption caused; shirtnotice or no notice events, or swift changes in protest tactics.
“Such being the case, police tactics too have to be as adaptable as possible to these ever changing circumstances. This course has been designed to make the police service more effective by strengthening the capability to enforce the law and maintain public order with a minimum of physical force,” said Matinga.
He stressed that it is essential that commanders at all levels have a clear understanding of their role and most importantly, be prepared to justify the decisions they make and the rationale behind them.
The trainees have come from police stations across the country.
