Malawi police detain driver over govt hijacked vehicle

Police in Malawi’s eastern district of Balaka are hunting for unknown criminals who have stolen a motor vehicle at gun point at Mangochi Turn off in Balaka district Sunday evening.

Balala police spokesperson Sub-inspector Joseph Sauka says the suspects who were four in number, were offered a lift by Richard Khoza 34 who works for Balaka District hospital as a driver.

“He was driving a motor vehicle Toyota Land Cruiser registration number MG 540 AD white in colour from  Liwonde going towards Balaka. Upon arrival at Mangochi Turn off, at around 1830 hours, the driver picked the four unknown men who said were going to Balaka town.”

Sauka says just before reaching Balaka the suspects attacked the driver after threatening him with a gun, tied him up before dumped him at Chitseko area along Chitseko- Msipe earth road.

“The driver was not harmed in any way only that the criminals tore his shirt which they used to wrap his face and also robbed him cash and mobile phones,” says Sauka

Meanwhile, Police has detained the driver Richard Khoza who comes from Mazale village, Traditional Authority Kapeni in Blantyre district for questioning and is still hunting for the criminals.
