Malawi Police donate reflective gear to neighbourhood teams

Limbe Police Station under its community policing branch has provided reflective gear to four villages in Group Village Headman Mang’omba in Chigumula in Blantyre in an effort to fight crime.

Coordinator of community policing branch at Limbe Police Station Inspector Clement Mwale handed in twenty five reflective jackets to various crime prevention committees at a function that was held at Mang’omba Primary School in Blantyre this week.

According to Mwale, the cops established crime prevention committees popularly known as ‘neighbourhoods’ to work hand in hand with the police in reducing crime in the area.

The reflective jackets will help the neighbourhood teams be conspicuously visible when patrolling their villages besides boosting their morale.

Receiving the equipment on behalf of the communities, chairperson of Limbe South Crime Prevention Forum, a Mr. Broer, commended the cops for the good gesture.

He hinted that the community policing concept has proved useful in reducing crime as people are involved protecting themselves.

Speaking at the function Group Village Headman Mang’omba asked the police to consider establishing a police post in the area. He observed the neighbourhood teams find it difficult to receive back up from police when they need it most.

Victim Support Desk Officer Sgt. Zione Kamoto also urged to work together to solve family problems to reduce domestic violence.

Community policing, which involves police and residents, is a pro-active approach to crime prevention.
