Malawi Police increase bounty on Njauju killers as CSOs laugh off
Malawi Police have increased the reward to anyone with information leading to the arrest of killers of the murder of Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) director of corporate affairs Issa Njauju from K1.5 million to K2 million.
Police deputy spokesperson at police headquarters Tomeck Nyaude confirmed the increase on the bounty.
“We want people to come with more evidence so that we can prosecute the case,” he said.
He said the police would leave no stone unturned in finding the killers of Njauju who was the corporate affairs director at the ACB.
However, executive director of Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation Timothy Mtambo laughed off the matter, saying this showed the police was incompetent to investigate issues.
“The police should rely on their own competency,” said Mtambo.
The police have so far arrested two people, a police officer, Christopher Naphiyo, and another person who was allegedly found with Njauju’s mobile phone handset.
But it looks like the state has very weak cases against the two as Naphiyo was arrested after he, out of drunken state of mind, said at a drinking joint he knew the killers of Njauju.
He is currently on bail.
President Peter Mutharika has said more than a dozen times the state would net the real killers.
Until now, this has remained a political podium talk.
Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) challenged government to find the murderers of Njauju.
CCJP acting national coordinator Martin Chiphwanya described the failure by the State to bring Njauju’s murder to justice as a stain on the national quest to good governance, saying those who are involved in fighting corruption now know they are vulnerable, “ can be attacked with impunity without the impunity being checked or brought to book.”
River sand miners found Njauju’s lifeless body half-buried on the banks of Lilongwe River behind Presidential Villas in the capital city’s Area 44 on July 2 2015.
His official vehicle, a Toyota Hilux double cabin pick-up, was found burnt to ashes at Mtsiriza in Lilongwe.
Postmortem results showed that Njauju was shot twice in the neck and chest before he was buried near Lilongwe River.
It is strongly believed Njauju was brutally murdered by regime thugs.
