Malawi Police officer killed in K90m bank robbery
Malawi police has confirmed the death of one of its officers after being shot by armed robbers who have robbed the First Merchant Bank ( FMB) branch housed in Livingstone Towers in Blantyre Tuesday night.

The robbers are said to have went way with over K90 million.
Reports say the armed robbers who were dressed in FMB attire pounced on the money which was about to be banked at the Reserve Bank of Malawi.
Witnesses told Nyasa Times that the two police officers who were manning the bank were shot and later rushed to the Queen hospital “but one of them was pronounced dead on arrival at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital while other police officer is receiving treatment.”
Malawi is experiencing a spate of armed robberies which has forced the Chinese businessmen threatening to leave the country.
To be honest this is asad news,I always tell my colegues here in South Africa how proud I am to be a Malawian, because Malawi its aPeace country,I even always say you will die in Malawi without hearing agunshoot in the streets like how we see it here in each and every day, every second,in South Africa guns are everywhere but idid not believe in Malawi we can have such cruel people who can shoot and kill the innocent cops, may his soul rest in peace and wish cops will cope and arrest those animals
Malawi police is aware of everything,
I am deeply concern with the rise of robbery that involves killing innocent people. I would urge Police to eliminate notorious criminal while in cell or when caught. The Police should not provide security to the Rights Groups because they are the ones influencing notorious acts in Malawi. When they feel pain they will not defend life anyhow, lets go for BINGU’S SHOOT TO KILL APPROACH.

I suspect that some senior DPP officials are running gang groups. This senseless spate of robberies cant happen without those in corridors of power involved. Within the ruling class, there must be thugs enjoying state immunity.
When late Bingu introduced the shoot to kill policy, human rights groups attacked the policy left right and centre. That gave criminals the message that Malawi is very kind to criminals and we are now paying the price.
Apa ndiye sizikuyenda ata pang’ono.
And how does one explain the incident in the Northern Region where both police officers who were on night duty at a police post go away and the same night thugs broke in and stole guns from the office which they used the same night to attack a trading centre? Coincidence? I doubt very much.
The way these robberies are being carried out I suspect some of the robbers are serving or exp-police officers police officers or are inside jobs. This is because they seem to have very good prior knowledge of the places they attack
Its high time Malawians moved away from Hard Cash economy to electronic or digital money. According to my predictions, this is small compared with what is going to happen next. I have predicted for the past 6 months that an RBM truck moving money between branches will shortly be taken, as long as we still stick to a cash economy. The mobile money platform is a move in the right direction, but it is not getting official Government support and the BANKS fear losing business, so I can see trouble ahead.
Too bad
Why Malawi?
VERY BAD, WHERE IS MALAWI GOING,OTHRE RACES ALSO ARE THE ONES PROMOTING THIS.
KILLING IS A VERY BAD SIN ———- + RIP +
90 million kwacha was alot of money 2 policemen were not enough to protect Malawians we should learn our security setup. Todays Malawi is not as it was in Kamuzu administration wake up police service
… the police allows the hire of at least two officers (from what I have heard before), let them put 4 as a minimum. it will be costly to the “customers” but a lot of innocent lives will be saved.

So Sad!!! Slowly the Warm Heart of Africa is becoming the Dangerous Heart of Africa like Countries from the West

NIB pse assist by finding out who the robbers are and deal with them before they strike. Has the police stopped having informants? Is this the democracy we fought for? If the answer is yes then we are better with Kamuzu. Please systematicall identify and kill all thugs.
Robberies of such magnitude are usually carried out with inside information. Imagine; uniform, amount, timing, destination. The loss of life is very sad.
What he talks and he was talking during campaign is not what Malawi is going through.
Please , Peter , Saulosi , 33% rigged votes and DPP , can you step down and handover the country to real citizens of the country. Malawi is heading to a disaster . It will take Malawi four hundred year to be normalised.
Please , fellow Malawians lets protect our country from this monster Peter .
The Burundi are the ones doing this. unfortunately our Police and the Immigration dont care what these foreigners are doing in our cities without proper papers. Here in Mangochi it is the same Police that shields these foreigners in exchange for cash. Whenever the MRA is coming to MH the shops for these foreigners are closed because the Police and the MRA officials tip these people in advance. Out problem is lack of patriotism for our country.
Indeed our is no more a good country to stay. Not only the foreigners ngakhale ife amene zayamba kuchititsa mantha especially Blantyre city zanyanya. How many people are been shot in this country by the robbers on daily basis

May the souls of the officers rest in peace. As a nation we need to acknowledge that we have a serious insecurity problem. The police should be supported by communities to rid our once peaceful nation of criminal elements. I seriously believe the community has a big role to play in reporting criminal elements. Tip off anonymous calls should be promoted. I also feel our officers lack professionalism.
… and we have lawyers representing known criminals!! shame!
Rip to the officer and deepest condoles to the family but it’s about time the banks change there polices when u enter the bank you would find lots off people just sitting and watching who is banking lots off money and who withdrawing I think about time there shuold start asking people who just loff around in the bank what there r doing inthe bank and check there CCTV to find what moves r in the bank thats there are lots off armed robberies happening with bank related god bless our peace loving country

Its part of development, justice and security as per DPP. I bliv in this country there is an Iris Group, involving politicians, security officers, big business men and some bodies abroad who are spiring up such acts in this country. No matter wat, the system will continue coz it has bin there before u were born. Poor Malawi, poor Africa, sorry fi di world at large.

People have lost hope in Malawi leadership
.Criminals are also becoming sophiscated each and everyday. The economy has gone haywire.Life has become unbearable in Malawi. The dead economy is cushioned only by Lip service by our crooked politicians. They are raising salaries for themselves with obscene percentages while the ordinary Malawian is reeling in poverty. For how long will Malawi go on like this?Nobody knows.
Malawi has no leadership
.Something big is going to happen in this country if our politicians do not sit down and think something else for this sinking country
.Rest in peace for the Policeman who has died in line of duty.

where dd they get fmb attire?
We at FMB feel the loss of this Officer who was killed in line of duty. We feel it most of all because when it comes to property, the Bank place its comfort in the care of the Insurance companies while on the other hand, the Police come in, to a greater extent, to protect the life of staff at FMB. This officer, therefore, died sacrificing his life to protect that of staff at FMB. For this reason we grieve and pray that his soul rest in peace. What is the price of life? if it had we were going to raise funds to pay for it. But since its priceless, we pray that light and justice will come down to rule over evil. At the same time, we wish the other Officer who is in hospital, a quick recovery.
Your English is good, and you’ve a lot of sense in your remarks. You’re likely a true son of the North.
And what does that say about your employer Siza? Their money is fully insured to the hilt but human lives are not? What kind of priorities are those? Are they going to compensate the widow and children of the police man who lost his life? Will they pay medical bills for the officer who was injured. Why are people working such odd hours in the middle of the holiday season when they should be at home with their loved ones? What is the overtime rate for junior employees like these days? I can tell you it’s not worth going through such a trauma.
Honestly speaking Siza, you would be better placed elsewhere. Try Reserve Bank, Presscorp, TNM and such like. All your friends of similar caliber have walked out of there. Don’t wait for them to Sharma-Surtee you after 15 years of hard work. Just walk out!Quit FMB Siza.
Oho where is security now?if security man is shooting while holding chimbonga chake,my fellow i told you b4 election that we vote for shit
First my condolences to the bereaved family.
Secondly, banks are to blame they operate after working hours in the name of customer care.
Third,govt/police service must remove the mk4s and equip its officers with automatic rifles.
Another thing,Over working is killing the officers:8/12hrs at the office then 12hrs for private duties its tiresome,Almost 24hrs working .
Lastly, idleness of police officers when on duty.
When president says spare no more robbers we said its wrong, where r u now as the cop z being brutally killed?
I GO FOR SHOOT TO KILL APPROACH. NO FWEE FWEE ABOUT HUMAN RUGHTS
May the souls of the front line officers rest in peace. Their death has awoken a conscious of women and men of goodwill across Malawi.
Rest in peace my workmate
Where are rights advocate groups? Had it been a cop shot robbers could smell noise day in day out, pliz police, dont spare them. Robbers should not roam freely

This is a sad development and scary. It just shows how the police officers are exposed to external risks and threats.A wake up call to the Research and Development team at Police HQs.Please, please change tactics from the traditional ones. Let’s strive not to lose another police officer in line of duty providing security to the general public.
May the soul of the dead officer rest in peace

Is internal information. How can they know that there is such huge amount of cash there?FMB must caution their employees and find out how those thugs get their uniform? Also think of your staff salaries if it is low it can lead to such problems
It’s very easy my friend, just go and get a Njamba Secondary School uniform. Grey trousers and a light blue shirt.
Malawi is now a dangerous country to live in as far as security is concerned.I think it is high time when security issues are to be prioritised Police training has to be reviewed and security courses have to be taught to all security officials not just pelete. As a country we have to unite and join hands in finding solutions to this mess

Road block police should be vigilant now as drug dealers and now using buses and small cars. they are packing the canabis in expand bags and china bags and police should open all these for inspection. Loaded trucks in locations are being used to transport drugs locally or to Zimbabwe and police in Machinjili should be monitoring loaded trucks.
May his soul rest in peace
this is really sad. something fishy with banking personnel. I think they connive with hoodlums and thugs .Not so long ago Inde bank Henderson street branch was robbed of K84 million Kwacha in similar fashion when robbers put on Indebank attire. What does this tell us? it means bank staff connive with thugs when and how to steal from banks.Because I wonder how and when did the thugs know that an FMB vehicle was going to deposit money with RBM? it tells us that someone tipped them to come at such particular time armed with guns probably more sophisticated than the guns the police were using in order to outsmart them.LESSON:
Banks must motivate their workers by giving them more money- its a pity that most bank staff in most banks in Malawi do not get enough money befitting their status and yet they handle large quantities of money in various forms. When they feel that they are less cared for these unprincipled staff resort to robbery by conniving with thugs. These must stop and only banks themselves can stop this by giving better pay to their junior workers.
Secondly I think Police need not take security risk lightly anytime they are discharging their duties in very risky operations like assisting cash-in -transit operations for banks and other companies and businesses dealing in very large cash transactions such as fmcg’s ie Shoprite or peoples. They should be fully armed and well equipped in case of attack and not just with one gun .
This should not be happening every now and then to our police. may the soul of the departed officer rest in peace.
I couldn’t agree more . Imagine not only counting, but accounting for billions of kwacha. Keeping books in order for them, making sure that their bank is running smoothly and remains profitable even in the middle of a recession and at the end of the day being paid peanuts? Knowing that they can afford to pay you more than what they pay but chooe not to bcoz it is ” company policy” that each new employee begins right at the bottom of the salary scale, regardless of qualifications.
FMB management plays with fire. And don’t tell us about pension fund or MASM. Can a person eat a MASM subscription, can someone pay school fees with a future pension which is probably going to devaluate anyway? I know people running kabaza businesses who are better off than an FMB worker.
FMB have some of the most demoralized and demotivated bank workers and they need to constantly be watching their backs. Hence all that CCTV.It would not be a surprize at all to discover that there was inside involvement.
Yaye abale, sipaja Ena mumati a Dzonzi chifukwa amakonda kupemphela koma akhale omwe sanyengelela, ndie a pulezident nkusankha Ena omwe ndi ankhanza omwe akukhudzidwa ndi infa ya Chasowa ndie mbava zikuvutabe? Zachisoni kuti taluza WA police. Ause ndi mtendere.

SAD.VERY SAD. CCTV RECORD MUST BE PLAYED.BUT WHY TAKE MONEY TO BANK AT NIGHT-8PM?BANK SECURITY MUST B REVAMPT-INSIDE JOB?BUT WHY DOES RADIO GIVE MORE DETAIL THAN NYASATIMES?
instead of finding solutions for the nation someone is busy talking about peter muntharika.is there any relationship here? amalawi umbuli.some banks are using g4s guards mma bank mwawo and then you call this security and when the banks are robbed you will then brame muntharika.what kind of hatrade.we should improve we malawians the way we think because i dont think muntharika is responsible in organising security in our homes and companies.if we think so then we are fools.
REST IN PEACE
Someone inside FMB is involved mark my words.
This English “the robbers are said to have went way….. instead of “to have gone away” Pathetic reporting. Where did you learn this Englsh.
May the soul of the innocent Police Officer rest in peace, and may God be with the bereaved family during this sad time, and end of times.
APM is being let down by IG. How can he deploy 2 cops at bank during this festiv? Why many robbery cases? Why all cops staying at open place when excuting duties? Advice. one cop shd always hide to shoot to kill inhuman robbers. IG to assign not less than 4 cops at robber’s most attractive premises.
APM shd consult retired JB on how ti keep this country a safe place for investers.
MAY the soul of deceased cop RIP.

Policemen were everywhere accusing JB of compromising security. This is the security they wanted Pita Muthalika to give them. JB was doing much better on all governance aspects than this bafoon called APM. Those who voted for APM have done damage to Malawi. Malawi is insecure, Malawi is sick, Malawi is hungry, Malawi is poor, Malawi is dying – courtesy of APM and his supporters, including policemen. RIP bro if you voted for JB.

Its just unfortunate that the robbers crossed the red line, they are trianed to steal/rob not to kill.
The fact that the robbers were in FMB attire and were at the premises on time, simply tells that this was a well coordinated attack. It is one beyond a police officers with just a gun in hand.
Penapake, the police service has to train its officers malingana ndi nthawi yomwe tiliyi. Most of the times these men in uniform even forget that they are on duty. Amangokhala phwiiiiiiiiiii.
Koma its sad that we have lost other 2 police officers in the line of duty, mpaka liti?????????
Just to help with links. call logs for the driver and bank officials on duty plus security guards should be scrutinised. I am sure this will provide some link. We need specialised police officers not just shooters and the use of long guns is useless and thieves have noted that police officers with such guns only act as scarecrows.
RBM should be held responsible for allowing banks to bring in money in the night. In which country does RBM work in the night?
KODI PETER CHITETEZO CHILIKUTI KULAMULI DZIKO SIKOPHWEKA PLEASE DO SOMETHING
Why banking money with RBM in the night. RBM closes at 4-30pm for all bank transactions. Branch transaction also close by 4-30 and money is put in the vault by 5-00pm. Does not sound right

These are people who are well known. If really DPP government. and Malawi Police want to catch these murderers tbey can, but they dont have the will because at the end of the day, they dine with them

I am very saddened with the loss of the Police officer. Though we do not have details and without apportioning any blame to anyone, I feel that there’s need to improve on guarding tactics than just being available with a gun at a place of duty. I usually see armed policemen comfortably seated at a place, sometimes carried away by events of the day. May his soul rest in peace.
And most often than not their guns are not even loaded, the one or two bullets they are given is in the pocket of the policemen. Their commanders are foolish enough to think mere police presence can deter crime, not at all. The police should be armed to the teeth and shoot to kill when ever they deem fit: no idiot should ever question their actions, under fucking human rights nonsense or what ever.
I someday quoted ‘chilungamo, chitukuko and chitetezo will continue. So what is this?
it was written on the Wall; that Babylon must fall.
Which is very unlikely since ”Babylon” is heavily insured. In fact my first thought when I heard about this robbery was insurance fraud masterminded by he-who-cannot-be-named.
I have two points to make [1] Economic situation on Malawi state [2] Training and security of Malawi Police.
The World is going through an economic change at the moment even country like Japan they are in recession. Malawi depend on donor it can not survive own it own. britain is cutting down on its donor aid to Africa and other Asian countries. Malawi is time for us to focus on surviving on our own and how can we do that. one our liders should have a vision. vision for food security we need to donate some of our land to irrigation by the government or private sector . if we have food now we can think about invest in other sectors. Ulimi has alot of potential we are 14million people and it high time we stop depending on using hoes and rain. Fesh water will be the next battle ground of the future and we malawians we have abandant fresh water to depend on. Please Malawians focus for the future dont hope but do.
Training and security of malawi police; Malawi police need to change the way it operates i understand it hard in africa to eladicate collaption but its easy to reduce it. These police men neeed to be trained on countersavaillance not being give a gun is the best security soluction they have to know how to use cctv employ identification procedures and others. Those working in these branches need to be given incentives bonuses by the banks. Training with the banks, they need to be respected and acknowledged by the banks what a great job they are doing. Malawi police need to learn from this death instead of not doing anything to improve on Bank security. May the police man rest in peace
This is very sad and it makes me feel very angry . My condolences to members of the murdered policeman’s family . This is such a painful time to lose a loved one . Malawi is steadily but surely going up in flames .
