Malawi police raid opposition MP Kadzipatike’s law offices in Lilongwe and Mzuzu

Dramatic scenes unfolded in Lilongwe after more than twenty police officers, armed to the teeth, descended on the offices of lawyer and opposition MP George Jivason Kadzipatike alongside officials from the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA), seizing clients’ files, laptops, mobile phones and computers in a sweeping raid.

In a simultaneous operation, a further twenty police and MRA officers raided Kadzipatike’s offices in Mzuzu, carrying out an identical search under the authority of a warrant issued by the Senior Resident Magistrate’s Court in Lilongwe.

Kadzipatike, a Malawi Congress Party (MCP) MP, is the man behind ongoing contempt of court proceedings against Chief Secretary to Government Justin Saidi – a legal challenge that has placed him on a direct collision course with senior figures in government.

The scale and coordination of the twin raids, mounted simultaneously more than 350km apart, is likely to raise serious questions over the timing and motivation behind the operation, given Kadzipatike’s role as both a sitting opposition MP and the lawyer spearheading legal action against one of the country’s most senior civil servants.

Neither the MRA nor police have yet offered a detailed public explanation of what specifically triggered the raids, nor confirmed what, if anything, has been found among the seized files, devices and computers.

The development is likely to intensify scrutiny of the relationship between law enforcement, the tax authority and the judiciary, at a moment when opposition figures and civil society groups have already been vocal about what they describe as a pattern of selective and politically motivated legal action against critics of the current administration.
