Malawi Police re-arrest Dauka Manondo on alleged plot ‘to kill witnesses’

One of the suspects in the ongoing case of the attempted assassination of former budget director Paul Mphwiyo, has been re-arrested , Police have confirmed.

Dauka Manondo was rearrested on Tuesday and taken to Kanengo Police station on suspicion of “wanting to kill witnesses and prosecutors.”

Police confirmed the arrest of Dauka but could not divulge more information.

Dauka’s brother, Pika Manondo, who is also a suspect in the shooting case said police, had refused relatives and lawyers to visit his brother.

“We are suspecting foul play in the way they are treating him,” he said.

Manondo brothers, lawyer Ralph Kasambara and MacDonald Kumwembe former Malawi Defence Force employee who had been convicted for robbery in 2005, are accused in the case.

Mphwiyo’s shooting on September 13, 2013 outside his house in Lilongwe opened a can of worms that led to the revelation of Cashgate, in which public officers, politicians and businesspersons looted billions of taxpayers money.

  10. It is utter wrong that these individuals who have personal issues were used by the people in power by targeting their vulnerability and problems to achieve what they wanted. And now that things are not as rosy, these small fish are being tossed around like this.

    I feel the justice system in Malawi is wrong. Why not get the big fish rather than overlooking the acts of those big fishes…? It is unfair but as the saying goes…if you are a nobody in society, you have no where to go for support.

    Its unfortunate that the Manondo brothers were linked to this mess and how can DAUKA try to kill prosecutors and witnesses? Is that for real? Seriously? Ma selective justice awa saalibwino.

  20. I nver thought my classmate from St Patrick’s Secondary School in Mzedi (Dauka) would end up a thug like this. A very talented footballer for our school and then a nice guy from Area 12 when his father was a well respected PS in the MInistry of Education. Now I see him in handcuffs. What a shame!

  21. The best way is for the judge to expedite the case by concentrating on the Mphwiyo case until it is concluded. Shelve other cases for the time being. This can take one week to be done with. Continued delays by the court will put the life of the judge in danger. The state together with the judicially should should map the way forward to fast track the case. Otherwise I see danger in the days to come. This is my piece of advice. Take it or leave it.

  30. Mphwiyo vs Kasambal and others are all enemies of Malawi almost in equal proportions. They were like vultures scrambling for the carcass of government coffers. I do sympathise with all if them even it means seeing them dead. Their conduct has inflicted untold sufferings to innocent Malawi. Only that as a country we can’t quantify (measure) the atrocities caused by the theft acts.
