Malawi Police on Tuesday re-arrested a 60-year-old Asian businessman Abdul Sattar Hassan who was on bail for allegedly defiling teenage girls in Zomba. This time he was picked on suspicion of possessing firearms and live ammunitions.
This comes barely 24 hours after the Zomba First Grade Magistrate’s Court had granted Hassan bail on Monday for being suspected of defiling a 14-year-old girl and indecent assault of a 15-year-old girl.
The suspect has been found with six firearms and 314 live ammunitions after the police had searched his house earlier on the day.
Eastern Region Police deputy public relations officer Thomeck Nyaude told Nyasa Times that the police re-arrested the suspect following a tip from the public.
“We got a tip from our reliable sources that the suspect has some firearms at his house. We have found three licenced firearms and the other three which are illegally kept in the house.
“The firearms are of the types of Winchester 22L model with serial number of B1095951 made in the USA, 223 REM rifle with serial number 91918 CCZ527 made in Czech Republic and an Air gun Webley having serial number 177 made in England.
“In addition, we also found 314 live ammunitions in the house.”
The suspect will appear before court soon to answer charges of illegal possession of firearms.
