Two of the robbers were burnt to death by angry mob in Makheta, Machinjiri Township; two others were caught, beaten and handed over to law-enforcers while the other two are still at large.

Limbe Police deputy spokesperson, Pedzitsai Zembeneko said in an interview with Nyasa Times that they have recovered the cash and two of the four rifles used in the robbery.

“We recovered a pistol and a pump gun on Saturday. The two suspects arrested will appear in court tomorrow (Tuesday) to answer to charges of robbery while we are still hunting for the other suspects,” said  Zembeneko.

The six robbers are said to have thrown wads of cash at the community members who started chasing them after engaged in a shooting with the Asian- the victim of the robbery- who pursued them in his vehicle, armed with a loaded gun.

The suspects were driving Toyota Carina and the victim pursued them up to Makhetha, unfortunately on-coming truck blocked the road and the robbers had no option but to jump off the vehicle and started running.

“The victim was still shooting at them and unfortunately, some stray bullets hit two women- one on the right leg and another on the shoulder. One of the women also sustained scratches on the tummy. Both
women are being attended to at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH),” said Zembeneko.

He said community members might have started chasing the robbers as they thought they were the ones that had shot at the women. People are said to have ignored the wads of cash the robbers were throwing at
their feet.

Police suspect that the pump gun might have been stolen from the Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (Admarc) as it resembles the one its guards use.

The Toyota Carina the robbers used has been reduced to rubble as community members went away with whatever parts they wanted.
