Malawi Police seize Rwanda genocide suspect Murekezi
Rwandan businessman Vincent Murekezi accused in his native country for participating in the 1994 genocide has been held in Malawi, Nyasa Times understands.

Murekezi was arrested Thursday after Rwanda National Prosecution spokesman Nkusi Faustin confirmed that they have been asking Malawi for the extradition of Murekezi from 2009.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Principal Secretary Dalitso Kabambe confirmed that Malawi government received “several requests” for extradition of extradition of genocide suspect.
About 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed by Hutu militias in the 100-day slaughter in 1994.
Police arrested Murekezi and he is being held at National Police headquarters in Lilongwe, Area 30 waiting for removal directions.
“Mr Murekezi has been arrest. He is being held at Area 30 police headquarters. Police are waiting for directives from government on the process of extradition,” a police officer said.
Central Region Police spokesperson Noriett Chihana, Lilongwe Police Station spokesperson Kingsley Dandaula and National Police spokesperson James Kadadzera were coy to comment on the matter, saying it was sensitive.
But a visit to Murekezi’s home in Area 49 , Lilongwe by Nyasa Times reporters proved the law enforces stormed the house in the morning and picked the Rwanda genocide suspect. He was taken into custody at Central region police offices before being moved to Police Headquarters at Area 30.
The arrest, Nyasa Times understands, comes after Rwanda National Prosecution sent a fresh warrant of arrest for Murekezi.
Before being removed in the country, Murekezi will appear before court for an extradition hearing.
He plans to challenge his extradition.
Malawi government officials reportedly helped him to acquire the Malawi passport using the surname of Banda with passport number MA078171 in 2011.
His Rwandan passport number PC939663 indicates that his birthplace is Ngoma-Huye in Rwanda and those details appears in a Rwandan government record, which names him a suspect of the 1994 genocide.
In the MA07817 Malawi passport which he earlier obtained, Murekezi identified himself as a Malawian citizen from Mbeya in Tanzania.
He also identifies himself in the other passport as Vincent Murekezi whose birth place is Kigali, Rwanda.
Murekezi said he followed all the laid down procedures to obtain the Malawi documents.

“Murekezi said he followed all the laid down procedures to obtain the Malawi documents. ” end of quote.
Yes, he did follow the corrupt procedures flourishing in Malawi by bribing Immigration bosses at that time..
if he really followed the right procedure why changing his real surname to Banda, is that what the right procedure require you to do(changing to a Malawian surname)? pathetic Malawi government officials
Why waiting for so many warrants yet you know him and helped acquire the land’s document? Chejumo alipo apa. No more court just extradite him back to Kagame and dance to his tunes. He is very dangerous check better how he moved from Rwanda to here.

Selective Malawian reporting:
“Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Principal Secretary Dalitso Kabambe confirmed that Malawi government received “several requests” for extradition of extradition of genocide suspect.”
This has been since 2009, yes/ so why is the reporter not telling us why it has taken this long?
Surely you must have asked why it has taken this long?
Did you not like the answer?
Grace Chiumia must resign and get arrested for aiding the genocide suspect of Rwanda. This is rubbish you can see 2009 Rwanda started to ask Malawi to extradite the Murekezi but Money played a role here. Such people we don’t them in this country must go. APM should fire this small meat minister. She has scandles every ministry she goes. Fokofo.
Ma Units you are laid back about current affairs.
In 2009 Grace Chiumia was not a Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security. She has just been recently appointed the Minister of Home Affairs and Security.
Otherwise, we should be praising her that the arrest of a genocide suspect has been done while she is a Minister and we should be asking what were the former Home Affairs Ministers doing all along?
those perpetrators of crime against human should be tried and given stiff punishment regardless of nationality and and status. … I understand that extraditing mulekezi is a very good idea, however other notable African presidents such as Omar albashri of republic of Sudan has been shielded despite by fellow African leaders. but he is on record to have been involved in deadly decisions that has caused mass killings in Sudan,,,,,,,,I beg African to fight together as a united states of africa with a unified law to curb crime continent wide. …,…let us be objective when dealing with criminals, ,,,,its very sad that some people are free when when African Union for sure knows they committed crime against people. As AFricans, we can have a independent African court to deal with such leaders if what we fear is international criminal court of justice which is blamed for bias when dealing with criminals like George w. bush, Tony Blair, gadaff, mkunda, omar albashiri, Islamic radical groups, sadam Hussein.etc.
Dear Malawi, I know you being a peaceful and calm country. Just one advice for you:”BEWARE OF MR. PAUL KAGAME.” HE WILL RUIN YOU AS HE IS DOING TO DRC & BURUNDI”. Its more dangerous if these issues include the fresh Malawi-Tanzania border conflict. Please be careful with Kagame!
Three things:
1) Why did Malawi government fail to send this guy back to Rwanda despite several requests to do so?
2) Why did Obama Chiumia, minister responsible for internal security, in her right senses decide to give parliament false information about this guy?
3) What happened for this guy to obtain a Malawian passport?
If indeed Malawi has serious citizens, and not zitserekwete zokha zokha as some quarters are made to believe, it has to move quickly to get clear answers to these very important questions.
let him go to his home country!!!!!!
Good start guys. If any lawyer applies against the extraction, we shall not stand and watch.
Step two: Nigerians – most of them are crooks who fled Nigeria after stealing or raping women. I can name them all: NDv, Stome, etc. Police should also smoke out all those who helped him to get a Malawi passport. Even this dis-Honourable Grace Chiumia.
ok,but you must be carefull of him he’s more than dangerous he’ll escape in the hands of snoring policemen from Malawi
or else they’ll play a game of bribering&let him run like he escapee …..
our police they don’t know how to run the big cases
