Malawi Police shoot dead Zambian suspected carjacker

Police in Lilongwe fatally shot a Zambian national suspected to be among a group of armed robbers that raided Kaliluti hotel for car hijacking, Nyasa Times  learnt the incident happened last Thursday.

The suspect was pronounced dead after reaching Kamuzu Central Hospital. His body is currently being kept at the hospitals mortuary for post-mortem.

Lilongwe police deputy public relations officer Ramsay Mushani has confirmed about the incident.

According to Mushani,  police got a tip on Thursday about the plans by the planed robbery that was about to take place by some Zambians and  a gang of Malawians.

The robbers  armed with Ak 47 rifle had plans to hijack a car at the hotel premises Thursday night. And around 9 pm police officers from the Anti motor vehicle theft well known as 997 started patrolling the premises.

Fortunately enough the armed robbers car a Toyota Carina silver in colour without any registration number was spotted . It was parked at the premises and police had followed the car.

As the robbers were coming out the car going towards the hotel entrance , police officers had ordered them to surrender themselves to the police. However, one of the armed robbers a Zambian national pretended to have followed the police order, suddenly jumped on one police officer who was walking from behind his fellow police officers with the intention to grab the police rifle.

Unfortunately the armed robber failed to grab the rifle. As some of the police officers were trying to rescue their mate, some of armed robbers managed to escape.

A police officer pulled the trigger and  shot the armed robber who was pronounced dead after reaching Kamuzu Central Hospital.

Police have since sent the photograph and finger print of the suspect armed robber to Zambia for identification and further investigations.

According to Mushani police are still looking for the armed robbers that escaped, they are continuing with snap road blocks, ambush raid and patrols to ensure that there is security in the country.
