Malawi police shoot to death car hijacker: Son of preacher Kaiya

Malawi Police in Blantyre have shot to death a habitual car hijacker who has been on the run after stealing a truck full of cement.

Police spokesperson for Blantyre police Andrew Mayao confirmed the law enforcers shot to death Jonathan Kaiya, son to famous preacher Fletcher Kaiya on Wednesday in Blantyre when he resisted arrest and wanted to snatch away a pistol from a plain clothes police officer.

“He has been on the run for two years after he broke away from Soche police and when the police wanted to arrest him, he turned violent, grabbing a pistol from a police officer,” said Mayao.

He said Kaiya stole a truck full of cement abnd sold both the truck and cement in Mozambique.

Kaiya is also accused of stealing a Nissan demonstration vehicle.

Mayao said the police officer whom Kaiya unsuccesfully tried to snatch the pistol from is in hospital at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre after he sustained injuries.

    Its just sad that for the mere crime of being a father, Fletcher Kaiya’s name has, for long, been associated with this thug’s. And even sadder that he now has to live with this memory of having borne a son who met his end by a bullet.

  12. Plain clothed policeman with a gun in one hand was trying to arrest him????? Is this possible? How can he manage to engage a handcuff with one hand occupied with a gun.. This is a common problem with scared policemen in possession of a firearm, he should have shot to disable the suspect… MURDER or MANSLAUGHTER??

  21. How can someone be violent with unyolo on?? this calls for further investigation. probe deep. there is more to this story that a one-sided story you got from the police. Were you not taught at school that any newsworthy story should be balanced? as in you get views from both sides???
