Malawi Pres. Banda re-declares assets: Wealth undisclosed
Malawi government has said President Joyce Banda re-declared her assets early this year and that the information is deposited with office of the Speaker of Parliament.
Minister of Information, Moses Kunkuyu, who is government spokesman, told Nyasa Times on Tuesday that President Banda declared her assets this year, confirming what the office of the Office of President and Cabinet (OPC) said this week.
Kunkuyu, however, could not be drawn to disclose the President’s new wealth.
“Details of what are the contents of the documents can be better given by the office of the Speaker of Parliament,” said Kankuyu.
Kunkuyu said President Banda, when she assumed the presidency, was legally advised not to declare her assets because she had already done so when she was vice-president, but she decided to declare her assets to set a good example.
Deputy chief secretary to the President and Cabinet Willie Samute also confirmed that Banda’s new assets declaration documents were lodged with the Speaker’s office.
“The President declared her assets when she was only a minister, vice-president and early this year after she already assumed the reins of this country. If you want to know more talk to officials at Parliament,” said Samute as quoted by the press.
Efforts to contact Speaker of Parliament Henry Chimunthu Banda proved futile as he is reportedly outside the country but Deputy Speaker Jones Chingola conformed the President declared her wealth but the file was with the Speaker.
