Malawi President cannot travel economy class, Goodall tells parliament

Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development Goodall Gondwe has  said President Peter Mutharika cannot travel economy class despite a motion that prevents government officials from using business class in aeroplanes.

Goodall: President will continue to have the luxury of business class
Goodall: President will continue to have the luxury of business class

Gondwe said this in parliament when he presented a K906 million budget for State Residences.

Lilongwe Mpenu South MP Vitus Dzoole Mwale had asked what comes of Nkhotakota South-East MP, Everson Makowa-Mwale,motion which seeks all public and civil servants to use economy class when travelling.

Gondwe said the motion does not concern the Head of State.

“You mean the President should travel economy class?” Gondwe shot back to which the MP said no.

Following the motion which was supported by both the opposition and government sides, it is illegal for those in government travel in business class which costs thrice as much as economy class.

Mutharika has resorted to using passenger planes because of the state of the economy but he has not travelled since he lost his bag last year on a flight from South Africa to Rome.

But the bag was later traced and recovered.

The government also gagged the inquisitive legislators when they were scrutnising the Malawi Defense Force vote.

Some members of parliament whose constituencies share Dzalanyama Forest Reserve in Lilongwe asked the rationale of using Malawi Army soldiers to guard trees whilst accusing the soldiers of killing and torturing people in their respective areas.

Leader of the House George Chaponda however said these were security matters which cannot be discussed in public.

A good example of the president who really understood the needs of his people and fought for the people is the Former president of Uruguay- Jose Mujica. Watch his interview with the Aljzeera correspondents on YouTube and you will learn a lot about being a progressive president who wears the common suit of the commoners.

Much as I am of the opinion that govt officials should use economy class, the idea of the head of state using economy class is both insane and ridiculous.
