Malawi prison registers first Covid-19 death
Some prisoners are exerting pressure on the government to release some offenders following the death of one of the inmates at Maula prison in Lilongwe due to coronavirus (Covid-19).
This is the first Covid-19 death at the prisons department.
He was an in-mate who was transferred from Nkhotakota Prison to their national isolation centre at Maula in Lilongwe.
Spokesperson for Prisons Chimwemwe Shaba has confirmed of the death.
According to Shaba, currently the number of in-mates who have tested positive for Covid-19 has risen to 118 while the number of prison warders is at 21.
Meanwhile, in past 24 hours, Malawi has registered 4,658 Covid-19 cumulative cases with 2,137 being active ones while 2,375 have recovered and 146 have died.
