Malawi prison warders kill inmate – MHRC investigating

Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) officials say they are investigating reports that a prisoner died at Mikuyu Prison in  Zomba in a commotion that led to 16 others escaping.

Peter Chisi, an official of MHRC said the commission received reports of the death of the prisoner last week.

“We were told that he was killed by prison warders at a farm where they were working following a commotion that led to others escaping,” he said.

He said the investigators would be going to Zomba to find out what happened.

Prison spokesperson Smart Maliro confirmed the death of a prisoner bit refused to give details saying the issue is under investigation.

He also confirmed 16 other prisoners fled from the prison farm they working and said nine have since been recaptured.

“This should not cause panic, the prison and the police are working round the clock to capture them,” said Maliro.

Recently four prisoners also escaped from Maula Prison in Lilongwe.
