Malawi Queens beat Uganda in Diamonds Challenge

Malawi national netball team, the Queens, has done what is needed to be done claiming a fairly neat victory over Uganda in the opening match of the Netball Diamonds Challenge played on Tuesday night at Ugu Sports Centre, Margate in South Africa.

The match ended 51-40 in favour of Malawi Queens.

Inspired by towering Blue Eagles Sisters shooter Joyce Mvula and goal attacker Sindi ‘Sniper’ Simutowe were a challenge for the She Cranes.

The Queens proved that they were at the tournament for serious business playing physical and body-checking style of play.

Malawi Queens coach Peace Kaluwa blended a youthful and veteran squad, which comprised of players like Thandi Galeta, Tower Vinkhumbo, Caroline Ngwira, Grace Mwafulirwa, Takondwa Lwazi.

Malawi Queens were a marvel to watch in the first and second quarter, as they dominated the proceedings of the match with the likes of Joyce Mvula displaying fantastic skills.

The Queens won both quarters 15-11 and 30-18.

However, in the third quarter the Queens made two changes bringing in Martha Dambo and Rose for Galeta and Mwafulirwa.

The substitutions were not effective enough, as Uganda came hard by dominating almost all the departments.

The third quarter ended in favour of Malawi with 40-30 baskets.

In the last quarter, the Queens breathed more fire after the introduction of Lauren Ngwira for Joyce Mvula.

After the last whistle it was Malawi Queens 51-40 and they will face the hosts South Africa tomorrow in an encounter to be beamed live on S4.

South Africa defeated Zambia in the game.
