Malawi Rugby team prepare for Lesotho tournament: Seek help

Ahead of the Rugby Africa D1 Cup in Lesotho between 15- 21 August, 2017, the Malawi  national rugby team has been busy preparing for the tournament with Coach Cathrew Chimimba appealing for corporate  support.

Chimimba told Nyasa Times that the team has been preparing for the tournament for the past few weeks with players meeting their own costs, a development which he said is worrisome.

“So far so good. The boys are really prepared for the 2017 D1 Cup and have been in serious preparations for the past  few weeks. We have players from across the country and hope to do better in Lesotho. We are not scared of meeting any opponent having played Lesotho last year.

“Let me also take this opportunity to appeal to companies and individuals to support us as we travel to Lesotho for the big tournament. We are going there as Malawi ‘s representatives and it’s unfortunate that players are meeting their own costs in such a national cause,” said Chimimba.

His sentiments were echoed by the team’s captain Justin Mkandawire who said their mission is to bring the cup home.

“We are ready for the tournament. Despite the financial problems, we are putting our psychological minds into the tournament. The most good thing is we all love the sport and hope this won’t affect us in any other way,” said Mkandawire.

According to Chimimba, the team is expected to depart for Lesotho on 14 August. Their first game is against Swaziland before taking on host Lesotho later.
