Malawi sand music festival attracts 16 artists

Legendary musician ‘Sir’ Paul Banda leads the way for local artists set to perform at this year’s Sand Music Festival which is to take place at Sunbird Livingstone Beach in Salima district.

Banda was also key performer at the event last year and is expected to lead the bandwagon of local artists, which include Black Missionaries, Maskal, Piksy, Lulu, Gwamba, Skeffa Chimoto, Soul Riders, Lucius Banda and Edgar ndi Davis.

Other artists to complete the urban-music star-studded list include Nesnes, King Chambiecco, Barry One, Trumel, Blakjak with Waliko Makhala and Agorosso representing the folklore music.

The event, in its fifth year running, is set for another epic three days of music and outdoor play from August 29th to 31st, 2014 in a newly formatted style of back to back performances that incorporates fashion-show and red carpet parade.

Sand Music Festival Coordinator, NKhwachi Mhango said the venue is ready and they have engaged community policing to beef up security.

He disclosed that the list of international artists to perform at the festival will be out by early July as they are currently negotiating with renowned musicians to headline the festival alongside the local acts.

“We are also engaging villagers to participate in the event and village headmen have already expressed desire for the festival to benefit them. By playing key roles such as security and tour guide, they (villagers) will also spice up the event through dances to entertain fans,” said Mhango.

This year’s event creates opportunity for families to join the patronage with outdoor lifestyles that are conducive for children as well; with curio makers at the beach promising to participate.

And sponsors Sunbird have pledged to make the event bigger and better with tickets selling at all of its hotels across the country at K13,000 (advance) and K15,000 at the gate.

“The hotel has 36 rooms and additions will be erected at campsite. Impact Events will complete Sunbird meals with local meals,” added Mhango.

This year’s event will incorporate fashion show to accord fashion designers showcase their talents through design that display and promote Malawian culture.

“Sand Music Festival has been re-formatted. We are proud and boast that sand music festival is one of the country’s only large-scale summer music festivals. This unique integration of a vibrant music line-up and summer sports has proven very exciting for fans especially because it is very Malawian.”

Sand Music Festival has also incorporated local deejays namely Panther, DJ Maya and DJ Joy as part of the performances andcalls on the corporate word to support the event .
