Malawi soldier stabbed to death with screwdriver

Malawi Defence Force soldier, Lance Corporal Chipiliro Chiwere, was fatally stabbed with a screwdriver in the populous township of Area 23 in Lilongwe  on Friday night, Police spokeswoman confirmed.

Chiwere is said to have picking up a quarrel with some unknown people near Masambabise where he had gone to see his friends coming back from a drinking joint.

The soldier was stabbed on the throat and abdomen,  according to news reports by local press.

National Police spokesperson Rhoda Manjolo said that  Chiwere was killed by unknown people and that investigations are underway.

One of Chiwere’s friends, with whom he was during the incident, has been remanded at Kamuzu Barracks guard room by the military police as investigations continue.

Army spokesperson Paul Chiphwanya could not immediately comment.

Reports also say another soldier is admitted at the Kamuzu Central Hospital after being stabbed in Mzuzu.

Chiwere was buried Saturday at the Area 18 Cemetery.

  38. Some comments are a disaster. This has nothing to do with those in power. It is a behavioral and social issue. It can happen to any one, a civilian or a military person. If you have your own agenda, don’t take advantage of such sad occasions to say that agenda. If you want a military coup, do it yourself not enticing the men in uniform. Just wait for 2019 and remove the current government. It is only through voting that can put the people you want to govern Malawi in power not suggesting uncivilized means. In fact there is no justification for the military to do what some of you are suggesting. Military Coup is an old and infamous way of getting power. No sane person can propose that unless that person is an agent of Satan.

    This is a wakeup call to the security forces. If thugs armed with screwdrivers can kill a proffessional soldier, then that tells us a lot about the security of this country.

  44. I know of a soldier (a lowly ranked one) who is into armed robbery as a source of extra-income. He is based at Kamuzu Barracks and was once married to a relative of mine but they have now parted ways because besides being an armed robber, he used to be clobbering my cousin with very severe blows and all sorts of battering for many years until two years ago when we asked her to leave the marriage because her health was at risk. The soldier is from Zomba and used to be based at Cobbe but is now at KB. He is into very serious armed robberies and I bet he is not the only soldier of this type in the Malawi Defence Force.

  54. You expect soldiers to get busy and be professionals when the government officials are treated to mapwevupwevu every weekend? The soldiers also need some time out to quench their mapwevupwevu thirst. They sit and rust in barracks and it’s boring but as professionals they need to take it easy on the booze. I personally know and grew up with chippi .he was a hard a hard working man .although he was a soildier he had some other businesses ma min bus n the like ,i feel sorry for his brothers thero and pastor chiwere.they have lost a pillar in their family. What ever happened that night may justice take its course …..he did not deserve to die

  67. I feel sad whenever I read news like this, but I also blame our solders for acting like all is well. I can not say kuti asilikali athu ali ndi matama, it’s kuti anthu ataya chikhululupiro in every security man. Nthawi yomwe anthu akuvutika with the rule of this man, asikali athu angoti phwii ngati si amalawiso. I thnk this is a wake up call to them. They must stand up and help the nation, nation si wokawo wolemera. Wake up solder wosamvomereza ma wolamuliro woputsawa.   68. Our soldiers r a nuisance, they drink kachasu up to 3 am. That is a lesson even to our police. This guy must not rest in peace for sure. Mwinanso waphedwa kamba ka zibwenzi mwina,uhule ma soldier uhule.
