Malawi Speaker Chimunthu Banda sticks with DPP

Speaker of National Assembly Henry Chimunthu Banda who is also Member of Parliament for Nkhotakota North on Sunday put rumours on his political colours to rest when he publicly indicated he remains a member of opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP)

Since the death of president Bingu wa Mutharika in April, DPP has faced mass exodus of its lawmakers and general membership to the governing People’s Party.

Many have been speculating that Chimunthu would be joining PP but he refused to comment on his political position in parliament, after Lilongwe Msinja North MP Peter Chalera asked him whether he was still a member of the DPP or not.

On Sunday at Dwasulu Community Day Secondary School Ground in his constituency where he launched K3 million football and netball tournaments, he interspersed his speech with DPP slogan, DPP woyee!

Chimunthu-Banda: DPP woyee!!

Apart from DPP sloganeering, the event was full of DPP supporters in party regalia cheering the parliamentarian.

The Speaker could not grant interviews after the meeting.

Regarding the sports competitions, he announced that this year’s football and netball trophies they have been raised from K1 million to K3million.

He also said he did not organize the competitions last year because of hooliganism.

The aim of launching two trophies is to develop sports in the area and to control youths so that they should avoid indulging in immoral activities. Clubs and schools in the constituency will compete separately.
