Malawi Speaker complains of inaccurate reporting

Speaker of Malawi Parliament Henry Chimunthu Banda has expressed concern with inaccurate reporting by the media on the parliamentary proceedings.

Chimunthu was reacting to a report which said the Speaker had stopped a debate on the ‘detention without trial’ of former attorney general Ralph Kasambara after bail was duly obtained from the court.

Speaker Chimunthu Banda: I didn't stop debate

The Speaker disputed the report that he had stopped the debate on the matter as reported in the press.

He explained that the matter had to be addressed by Minister of Justice, Ephraime Chiume, who was not in the House and he deferred the debate until a ministerial response.

“The other time a member for Nkhata Bay Northwest came into my office in distress; she was affected by a newspaper report. This is something that should be avoided,” Banda said as quoted by MaraPost.

He said the inaccurate reporting reflected unfairly on the Speaker.
